January is #PovertyAwarenessMonth, a time to reflect and bring awareness to the links between poverty and behavioral health.
The current poverty line for a family of four is $31,200 or less. People with incomes below the poverty line reported feelings of worry, nervousness, or anxiety at higher rates than average: 19.4% of people living below the poverty line, compared to 12.7% of Americans generally, according to 2022 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In addition, addictive diseases can cause or worsen poverty for some folks by causing them to miss work/lose their jobs, use their earnings to support their substance use disorder, and potentially causing costly medical issues.
